Lifestyle Design and Reinventing Retirement

Monday I wrote about a TED video by Tim Brown, on the subject design. It challenged me to consider a question that I think is on the minds of many Boomers and Gen-Xers about how they are going to reinvent retirement in this modern world. The question is:

How can Boomers and Gen-Xers enjoy the benefits of retirement while at the same time remaining active, productive, and profitable members of our modern society?

What this question boils down to is a matter of lifestyle design. By this I mean how the whole of a person’s life (family, health, community, dreams, purpose, etc.) fits together in a homogeneous way and provides benefit and blessing both to themselves and to those they interact with on a regular basis.

You see, retirement, by my definition does not mean to stop working altogether (most people cannot/don’t want to do this) but to transition into a lifestyle that allows for you to be more in control of your time, talents, efforts, and the direction of your life travel.

How can a Boomer/Gen-Xer wake up in the morning and engage in activities that they choose, while maintaining an active, productive, and profitable life? What can they do to spend time with family, travel, volunteer, and create in a way that makes them happy, healthy, and a value to their community/society? What is their life-dream and how can they create a design plan that brings all the elements of that dream into fruition every day?

Most people don’t consider such things and as a result end up looking to get back into the workforce shortly after the big “retirement party.” One retiree who is 70+ said, “I am bored to death, I just want something to do.” Another said, “I want to continue to feel useful and valuable in my retirement life.”

Both of these folks retired like they had been told to and found that without some lifestyle design work in place they were doomed to “being retired.” What they really want is to design a lifestyle that will give them the benefits of retirement (slower pace, more control, and the pursuit of what they consider valuable) while still being active, productive, and profitable (financially capable for their own needs).

What about you? Are you planning for those great years of life where you can live out your dreams at your pace and according to your desires? What advice can you give to those who are just beginning the process?

Helping Boomers and Gen-Xers Design Success!!

Tomorrow (May 15, 2012) I am shutting down two blogs that have been a part of The Doulos Group for the past two years. I am not shutting them down because they are unimportant of because they are no longer relevant. I am shutting them down in order to focus my attention on the things in life and business that I am most passionate about.

Those things are simply:

  1. I am going to help people design a life-style that blends life and business to fulfill their dreams.
  2. I am going to focus my efforts on helping my clients through the process of discovery, design, and delivery of their passion within their definition of success.
  3. I am going to focus my efforts on Baby Boomers and Gen-Xers who are looking for a way to reinvent retirement.

With these simple rules in place I hope that everyone who comes to visit will find something worth while, something that makes sense, and something that helps them design success!

Come back often and let’s get this party started!!!

What do you want to do?

"Boomers on Wheels" at the CREHST ( ...

Sometimes I think that I am going crazy!!! I read a lot of books, articles, and magazines about Boomers and what’s best for them in their “retirement years.” I watch the “experts” all gussied up on the television talk shows and review training videos that try to convince Boomers that “life isn’t over” and “they can still do lots of things” as they transition into retirement.

Now wait just a minute! I am not dead, nor on the verge of collapse just because I’ve had a few more birthdays that most! My mind, as well as my back still work, and I don’t want to be “put out to pasture” just because someone determined that a date on a calendar said it was time! And neither should you …

The question you should be asking yourself is not, “What do the experts say I should do?” but rather, “What do you want to do?” While it is true that many of us reach this time in our lives when our children are gone and we have more time to consider our own, but that doesn’t mean we should be considered “less productive” or “less valuable” than we have been before. As a matter of fact, my opinion is just the opposite. I think we can use this second chapter in our lives to do magnificent, brilliant, and incredibly valuable things, that have to this point been “back burner thoughts.”

The question is, “What do you want to do?” Don’t listen to the voices who tell you to stop living and start sitting. Don’t let the younger generations tell you that “you had your time, now its ours.” Keep you head up, keep dreaming, and make the second chapter of your life a truly awesome experience!

One Option for a Retirement Business

Retirement

Retirement (Photo credit: 401K)

You know, as I write this post, I am a little nervous. Every time you suggest something might be a good thing, you are open for criticism. So, let me start with a statement of intent:

I would love to see every Boomer who is or is about to “retire” find a passion that would make a great retirement business AND allow them to have a part in changing the world for good.

But, some Boomers are just tired. Tired of work, tired of long hours, and tired of just getting by. They have worked hard in their job/career and the prospect of starting something brand new from scratch, while appealing in theory, will likely never happen.

If there was something that already existed, something that they could do from anywhere, and something that would handle most of the monotony that owning a business requires, then there might be some interest. A sort of “home-based, franchise-styled” business. That might well be an interesting option to many Boomers.

Well, those kinds of businesses do exist. Most of them are found in the Network Marketing arena and many of these businesses can provide a reasonable income for the retired Boomer. (In the interest of full disclosure, I have worked in this arena on and off for more than 20 years and am active with my preferred company today.)

Before any Boomer jumps into this style of business, you need to know the real skinny:

  1. Understand the business that you are considering. Don’t let anyone “excite” you into a business. Many network marketers use this kind of “excitement selling” to get people “into the business.” Only after you are in do you get to know what it really takes to be successful for the long run.
  2. Make sure that the product of the business is both saleable and something that you can put your name on. If you don’t understand the product or whether or not it is really a good value for your customers, don’t “get in.” I heard a network marketing leader just the other day say that the product he sold “had not done anything noticeable” for him, but he was sure it was a great product. Beware of selling something with questionable value.
  3. Understand the compensation plan. You need to know how you are getting paid, not because of the company is going to “rip you off,” but because some compensation plans have unique rules that can drastically reduce your compensation from month to month.
  4. Be sure to read the policies and procedures manual. There are some companies that have a provision to stop paying affiliates/distributors at the discretion of the company (usually with only 30 days notice).
  5. Only join a company that you have done your due diligence on. If you are being pressured to join “right now” be careful!

I have been in companies that collapsed and ceased to exist and in one’s that have succeeded beyond the wildest imagination of the owners and its distributors. In those that have done well, the opportunities for Boomers is real and those willing to learn and work hard, can enjoy a business that can be run from anywhere and can allow even the tired Boomer to make a dent in the universe.

PS – I would love to hear what you have to say about this arena of business but don’t comment with the idea of recruiting other readers into your business. Those comments will not be posted.

I Just Can’t Stand It Anymore!!

I just can’t stand it anymore!! I said in my last post (The Doulos Group Launches) that I was going to combine my efforts at Baby Boom Entrepreneurs with those at The Doulos Group. I was wrong in trying to make that work and want to let you know that I can’t stand being away from my fellow boomers any longer.

I will be working hard again to provide you all with valuable content that will help you make the best choices when it comes to creating the perfect “second chapter” for your life. I hope that what is done here will serve you well and I am always available to answer specific questions you might have.

Thanks to all of you who have continued to check back here to see when/if I had come to my senses and begun to post again. You were very much apart of my decision to “re-open” BBE.

Talk to you all soon …. Dave!

Life in a Crazy World

I started a blog in April called “An Old Hippie.” With all the busyness that often controls my life, I never really got it off the ground. I did,

Old Hippie Ln

however write an article that I would like to re-publish here. With all the craziness that we see around us these days,  I hope that you will find this post of value to you!

I just finished reading several news articles today from crazy storms, to domestic violence, to the upheaval in Syria, high gas prices, and the beat goes on!

It seems to me that this old world is getting crazier and crazier. And we think, in our day, that we are way more sophisticated, so much more advanced, so much more intelligent than those who have proceeded us. That sounds even more crazy to me. After all what is it that we have (besides some pretty cool technology) that make us “better” than previous generations?

We have cooler stuff – but we also have people who will kill us to take it away.
We have better equipment for producing food and staples – but we have more people without than ever before.
We have more oil than ever before – but the gas prices are headed for new highs.
We have more global wealth than every before – but nearly every country on the planet is suffering from current or near financial collapse.
We have more free education available – but we have fewer truly educated people.

I could go on and on about the great things we have and how they are not making our lives better, safer, or less fearful. But these examples ought to make us understand that we live in a crazy world! And the prospects for the future are more of the same. Crazier and crazier!

So, what’s the answer? In one sentence it is, “We must choose to live a quiet and peaceable life, honoring God and loving God’s creation.” I remember the old hippie song that said, “All we are saying is give peace a chance ….” I’m in, how about you?

Peace comes when I live without fear, but also when I live in a state of satisfaction and rest. Knowing that as I work to care for myself and my family that what I produce will meet our needs and wants. Then, as a proponent of peace, if I am granted an abundance, I should look for ways to make that available to those who cannot care for themselves (I did say cannot, not would not).

You see, this is how it used to be! People working hard and benefiting from their efforts. It used to be that we did not think that someone else “owed” us something. We worked for ourselves and ended the days satisfied that our labor had produced positive results. Then, when we heard of others in need, we would give of our bounty for their benefit as well.

Yep. the world is crazy. Crazy because we have turned truth inside out and made ourselves to be slaves of the system rather than free men and women able to do and be what we choose through hard work and satisfaction.

What do you think?

Looking Forward to the New Year!

As I write this post, we are still a couple days short of Thanksgiving but already I am looking forward to the new year. Baby Boom

The First Thanksgiving, painted by Jean Leon G...

Entrepreneurs is moving in the direction of a full-blown member site and I am very excited to see how its develops throughout the year. I will be adding details for the official “launch” during the last couple weeks of December so stay tuned and let me know what you think!

In the mean time, you can sign up as members of the site right now and by doing so you can get in on the ground floor of all the excitement that the new year will bring. So make sure that you begin now to not only sign up yourself, but to share this site with all your Boomer friends and help me kick this thing off with a bang in January.

Let be “bait the hook” by telling you about three unique aspects that you will find here:

1. There will be a section on the site called “Boomers helping Boomers.” This section will cover everything from “how-to” information to “aging in place” advice, to travel tips, etc. It will be a place for Boomers to learn about living a life full of joy, impact, and security.

2. There well be a section on the site called “Boomers, Business, and Finances.” This section will help Boomers understand all aspects of living financially secure through the entire second act of their lives. We will have information on the current job market and how unemployed Boomers can find meaningful work, business opportunities for Boomers, financial planning and how to reinvent retirement.

3. There will be a section on the site called “Making a Dent.” This section will help Boomers join forces and create opportunities to leave our world better than when we found it. It seems to me that when all we think about is ourselves and how life is about us that we really diminish the true meaning of life.

Being the “dreamer” on my team, I don’t know all the details about how this is going to pan out, but I do know that this is the direction we are heading. I would love for you and those you invite to be an active part!

Stay tuned and stay active!

Boomers Helping Boomers

I promised to keep you up to date on the efforts some Boomers are beginning to help other Boomers find work in these tough economic times. I had a great, albeit very preliminary conversation with a couple of very interesting ladies who have a burden like I do to help as many Boomers as possible.

What we are working toward is a training program designed to train business owners about the value that Boomers can bring to their workplaces. We also need to help Boomers understand the technology and tactics of the current business climate.

Our talks are in the very preliminary stage, so if you have some ideas or thoughts that you would like to share, please leave a comment and/or contact me so that we can talk. I am dedicated to finding something that we can do now and expanding that into an ongoing program that will provide Boomers and employers with all that they need to bring willing workers together with companies who understand the value these willing workers bring to their businesses.

Please join the conversation and let’s become a community of Boomers helping Boomers!
