Marketing Your Way to Business Success

I find it interesting when I talk to business owners these days. It seems that most of them have very strong views about what they are willing to do to market for business success. Some like outbound marketing techniques (ads, mass mailings, television and radio, trade shows, etc.) while others have abandoned almost, if not all outbound marketing in favor of inbound marketing techniques (blogs, content marketing, social media platforms, whitepapers, etc.)

But, those businesses who are building the strongest and most successful marketing strategies understand the benefits of a “blended” program that allows them to network on and off line. Let me explain with an example:

John Doe visits your companies website and enjoys an article you wrote about some aspect of your business. In that article you provide access to a free cd giving John more information about the theme of the article. The requirement for the free cd is, of course, his name and address. Once you receive the request, you send the cd out and have created a new lead for your products and services. Included in the thank you letter you send with the cd, you introduce John to your Facebook and Twitter accounts along with your YouTube channel. You also remind John of your blog/website url and invite him to subscribe via your RSS feed. Then on a regular basis you put more information in the hands of John via regular mail when they are ready email, always offering your products/services as a benefit to meet your clients needs.

By blending on and off line networking techniques, your marketing strategy will be seen as unique and will bring your business a more loyal and referring client base. This of course leads to more inquiries, more information requests, more customers/clients, and more business success. SWEET!

Inbound Marketing Balance

I just had the privilege of speaking to a group of local business people on the subject of business blogging. We had a great time together and I saw some real excitement in them about getting started in the world of blogging. However, as I thought about the time we spent together and the excitement of the day, I realized how each of these companies need to understand inbound marketing balance.

What exactly is inbound marketing balance, you ask? That is a very good question, I am glad you asked! Inbound marketing is the type of marketing that produces great content and education for both current and potential clients/customers. By providing this content our current clients become raving fans and our potential clients learn to trust us BEFORE they decide to approach us to purchase our products or services.

The balance that is necessary here is four-fold:

1. Inbound marketing must have consistent and quality content production.

2. Inbound marketing must have a way to capture the personal information of those who become interested in this quality content.

3. Inbound marketing must have as an end the sale of our products and services.

4. Inbound marketing must have the tracking and analytical tools necessary to evaluate the efforts of our marketing strategies.

Most of the time people get started with a blog without a clear understanding of its purpose. As the blog languishes for that lack of purpose, the blogger gets discouraged and eventually abandons it. Not because they did not have great and consistent content, but because they had to balanced strategy as to how to convert that great content into leads and those leads into clients/customers. The blog “fails” and the blogger promises never to “waist their time” on such things ever again.

All of this could be avoided if they simply understood inbound marketing balance.
