When its time to talk not text!

I remember an old American Airlines commercial in which the owner of a company called his sales team into a conference room to tell them

English: "Wilshire Room," company in...

that things were not going so well. As a matter of fact the owner had just gotten off the phone with an old friend who had just fired his company.

In the commercial the owner was handing out plane tickets to all the cities where the company had clients so that each sales manager could go and visit with them in person. After tucking the last ticket in his own pocket someone asked him where is was going. His answer, “I am going to see an old friend.”

In the fast paced world of the internet, sometimes we need to understand that what makes businesses grow and continue to do so is not to “like” thousands, or “follow” the gurus, but to spend time with some well chosen friends.

Just a thought. What do you think?

Boomers Helping Boomers

I promised to keep you up to date on the efforts some Boomers are beginning to help other Boomers find work in these tough economic times. I had a great, albeit very preliminary conversation with a couple of very interesting ladies who have a burden like I do to help as many Boomers as possible.

What we are working toward is a training program designed to train business owners about the value that Boomers can bring to their workplaces. We also need to help Boomers understand the technology and tactics of the current business climate.

Our talks are in the very preliminary stage, so if you have some ideas or thoughts that you would like to share, please leave a comment and/or contact me so that we can talk. I am dedicated to finding something that we can do now and expanding that into an ongoing program that will provide Boomers and employers with all that they need to bring willing workers together with companies who understand the value these willing workers bring to their businesses.

Please join the conversation and let’s become a community of Boomers helping Boomers!

Stamping Out Mediocrity

I have the privilege of meeting with an amazing group of business minds on Tuesday mornings every week. This group varies in size from about 3 to 7 depending on everyone’s schedule for the week. When we get together we talk about all things business and work hard to help each other work through business struggles and strengthen business choices.

This morning we had a great conversation about business owners stamping out mediocrity. One of our group recounted her experience in an industry she worked in that was plagued with mediocrity. To set herself apart from her competition, she looked to see where the mediocrity existed and made the kind of changes to her business choices that dealt with those areas of mediocrity. By removing these mediocre issues, her business became much more successful than her competition.

You see (to use an old baseball analogy) the difference between mediocrity and the Hall of Fame can be as little as on hit per 20 at bats. You see, a lifetime 250 hitter doesn’t usually end up in the hall of fame but a lifetime 300 hitter does. The difference between being a lifetime 250 or 300 hitter equates to one additional hit for every twenty times at bat throughout your career.

While this increase seems manageable, the effort to increase to this new level of success in noteworthy. Just like business, if we want to move our business from mediocre to super-stardom, we must find those areas of change that make us stand out and then put in the work necessary to make the changes permanent throughout our careers.

Mediocrity plagues American business today. Let’s choose as business leaders to start a campaign of stamping out mediocrity!

Monday’s Question – What Makes a Guru a Guru?

As one who works in the area of business and life coaching, this may not be the best question to ask, but here goes, “What makes a guru a guru?”

I get emails every day from people who promise (for a not so nominal fee) that they will teach me what I don’t know about something that they do. Most of the time they will provide a “free trial” but if you want the really good stuff you have to pay.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not opposed to paying people for knowledge that I need, that they have (I do that myself), but what I want to know is what makes a guru a guru? What makes their knowledge something worth paying for and how can you find out before you make your first payment?

That, my friend, is the million dollar question, right? I am hoping that the conversation that is question starts will cause people seeking to sell their knowledge and expertise to really understand what is valuable and what is fluff! Hopefully we will stop selling the fluff and only sell the value.

Baby Boom Entrepreneurs – Saturday Update 3

This week’s Saturday Update I want to look at two things. First I want to take time to remember the tragic events of 9/11/2001. I want to thank everyone who responded to help and let the families of those who perished to know that my family and I will be praying for them all tomorrow.

Second, I want to ask my Boomer friends to help me find some ways to help fellow Boomers who are without work find ways to make their skills, talents, and values known to employers looking to hire.

As we consider these things, I am interested in continuing the conversation that has started this week and am looking for your thoughts. Please comment here and/or email me with your thoughts. This is important and we need to rise up again like we always have before!

Baby Boomers – Rebels Again!

I am a “mid-point” boomer (born in 1955). In my young years, I was able to “Rock around the clock,” witness the aftermath of the deaths of John Kennedy and Martin Luther King, and play in the yard from sun up till sun down without worrying about someone hurting me! I was raised in a conservative household but am a hippie at heart.

By the time I got to High School (1969-1973) things were changing. Our country was going through a battle for its soul. We boomers were a rebellious lot. We were looking for something bigger than ourselves. We wanted to “give peace a chance.” We questioned authority and chose to make our own decisions. We became innovators and inventors who traveled the globe looking beyond ourselves.

Oh, we had our problems and we made our share of mistakes. However, our curiosity drove us to explore space, create the home computer, and consider our place in the grand scheme of the universe.

Now we are considered to be the “greedy” generation and even those in government have begun saying that the countries economic problems are the result of our generation. (As I said before we have made our share of mistakes.)

But what made our generation great was that we were curious explorers of everything that struck us in just “that way.” We were rebels who didn’t just accept the status quo, and who also saw that we were not isolated in the world, but were given a place of leadership. In many ways we took our desires for personal freedom too far, but we do believe that people have the right to be free. We are a great generation and we did really change our world.

As we struggle now with the forces that again have set out to destroy our world, our life, and our families, it is time for another rebellion from our generation. This time we need to rebel against closed minded greed. We need to take up causes bigger than ourselves. We need to learn from the past so that we are not doomed to repeat it. We need to be a people of grace, of honor, and of principle. Where we agree we are strengthened and were we do not we can show mutual respect. When others of our generation are hurting and need help we need to step in. We need to prepare our children and grandchildren for the future by being the powerful free-spirits that we were in our youth.

Time to rise up my boomer friends. Rise up and be counted. Rise up and be responsible. Rise up and be productive. Rise up and bring a new revolution to the streets of our country. Not one of “sex, drugs, and rock and roll” but one of love, courage, and passion. World changing is in our blood! Now is the time – Baby boomers let’s rebel again!

The western front of the United States Capitol...

On this the 235th anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence, I want to say happy birthday to the country that I love. In my now nearly 56 years, I have had the privilege of citizenship and the opportunities of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I am not blind to America’s shortcomings, but I am optimistic about its resiliency and ability to come together for the common good. So, as we all enjoy a day of barbecue, picnics and fireworks, I just want to say to my 270,000,000 neighbors, enjoy the day and when the celebration of the day ends, let’s buckle down and get to work. Let’s move this country out of this time of great divide and return it to the founders ideals and above all let freedom ring!
